Enter our Brazilian rainforest and discover one of the largest venomous snakes in the world. The bush master, known here as surucucu-pico-de-jaca or sometimes nicknamed the queen of the woods, remains a fragile species, about which we know very little and which, however, is exceptional in many ways.
With our biologist guides and a caretaker of the animals in this serpentarium dedicated to this species, you will be fully immersed in the Atlantic Forest in a spirit of sharing and conviviality during a late afternoon with a meal in a perfectly safe environment!

We offer this 3-hour tour for groups of 4 to 10 people.
The serpentarium visit is available from Tuesday to Saturday all year round. We meet at the serpentarium door at 3:30 pm.
We can arrange a taxi (charged separately). We ask customers to arrive at the Serpentarium 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled time, knowing that the breeding facility is located at about one hour drive from the city of Ilhéus.
You must wear suitable clothes for a slightly cold walk, because in the forest, the temperature is lower than in open places. We also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes.
Other than that, you can bring whatever you want (cameras, phones, etc.)!
Animals cannot access the serpentarium, so leave your pet at home or with someone else.

The serpentarium we are going to visit has bred the species "Surucucu-pico-de-jaca" from the Atlantic Forest (Lachesis muta rhombeata) since 2003, having been the site of the first reproduction in captivity of the species in the world.
The surucucu is the largest venomous snake in the Americas and the second in the world, reaching 3.4 m in length. It is an endangered species of relevant ecological and scientific interest.
The serpentarium's success in keeping bush masters comes from the fact that they raise the species in their own territory, in the forest. During the visit, you will enter the territory of the most famous and feared species in the cocoa region, in complete safety.
We will observe some live snakes through a glass, in an area dedicated to visitation, with the guidance of a specialized monitor, giving the opportunity to get to know better not only the surucucu, but the world of snakes in general.
The educational material allows us to live the experience with all our senses. Depending on the day, we can see snakes feeding.

The species

The serpentarium is a four-hectare plot of land that has been largely reforested. You will be able to feel the temperature and the smells of the Atlantic Forest, habitat of the surucucu-pico-de-jaca. After a 10-minute walk, we arrive at the entrance to the serpentarium where a snake caretaker will welcome us.
For 1h30 we will talk and show the animals. You'll see the snakes immersed in a real rainforest, in their open-air enclosures, and you'll learn a lot about their biology and habitat.
Before nightfall, we will watch the sunset in the middle of the forest and have dinner with our biologist and the animal caretakers.
